Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.

Subject: LWV October News
From: League of Women Voters of South Central Texas

Hi Friends!

It's go time! Early voting starts on October 24 (this coming Monday), so this is prime time to pick up the League's highly respected Voters Guide or check VOTE411.org, the Guide's online version. League members have been trekking across our five county area, distributing the printed Guides to all public libraries and many other community locations. If you haven't spotted one and prefer the paper version, text me or give me a call (361-772-3228) and I'll make sure you get one!

Help us encourage voting by asking your friends and family about voting or inviting them to go with you vote. And, if they don't have a Voters Guide, please help us stretch our League resources by offering to share yours!

Thank you, once again for all the ways you are helping to empower voters and defend democracy right here in out South Central Texas community!

Janis Richardson
LWV of South Central Texas President

We had a fun day at the Columbus Country market on September 24 with a table loaded with helpful information about voting and a fun activity for children - our "Best Texas Animal" mock election. It was close race, but children elected the Texas Longhorn as the clear winner! We also reminded adults to check their voter registration before the October 11 registration deadline and get ready for early voting for the November 8 midterm elections to start on October 24.

Many thanks to Colorado County members Lois "Robin" Robinson and Vicki Wiste for joining League President Janis Richardson for this fun day.

Our League sponsored the Columbus Chamber of Commerce's first post-pandemic Lunch & Learn on Thursday, September 20, providing lunch and a panel presentation on Making Democracy Work in Colorado County. Colorado County team leader Robin Robinson served as MC; League President kicked off the panel with an introduction to the League and information on how the League's Voters Guide is prepared. Colorado County Elections Administrator Rebecka LaCourse shared the many ways that her office ensures safe and secure elections, and Colorado County Precinct One Justice of the Peace Judge Billy Hefner wrapped up with an engaging description of the duties of his office and how he handles cases that come before him.

Many thanks to Robin Robinson for pulling this together and League member Ester Chandler and spouse for preparing and serving the delicious lunch.

League Members & Friends Write 200 Letters to Voters!

On Saturday, October 15, an enthusiastic group of League members and friends gathered to write letters to Texas voters encouraging them to vote in the November 8 election. In two hours, the group cranked out more than 200 letters!

For this letter writing party, we partnered with Vote Forward, a nonprofit group that helps people encourage fellow citizens in underrepresented communities to vote by writing letters. Vote Forward provides contact information and a basic letter; volunteers add their heartfelt, nonpartisan "why I vote message" and put their letters in the mail. Vote Forward research shows that handwritten letters like these can boost voter turnout by almost 4% - and that's huge!

If you would like to join our letter writing, go to Vote Forward, create an account, look for the Texas social campaign, follow the steps to indicate the number of letters you would like to write and download your letters. You're then ready to add your personal nonpartisan message and get the letters ready to drop in the mail by October 29.

Many thanks to Fayette County member Elota Patton for hosting the group at her home and helping to make letter writing fun with sangria and other delicious refreshments!
