September News

We Love (and Need) Our Hometown Newspapers!

With small town papers going out of business every day, our South Central Texas area is fortunate to still have 13 local newspapers. Recognizing how fortunate we are not to live in a local news desert, our League identified "local news and democracy" as a priority area for this year. Our goal is to grow awareness about the essential role that local news plays in our community, and identify concrete steps we can take to keep us off the news desert list!

We are now in phase one of our Local News & Democracy project - and we are learning alot about the local news landscape here at home. So far, we have interviewed the editors of the Cuero Record/YorktownNews-View, the Fayette County Record, the Hallettsville Tribune-Herald (and 3 associated papers), and the Schulenburg Sticker, and hope to visit with editors from the Weimar Mercury, the Gonzales Inquirer, and the two Columbus papers in the coming weeks.

Our next step - as recommended by LWV of Washington's recent study on Local News and Democracy - is to do a content review of our area papers. This review will help us get a clearer picture of the how local newspapers are keeping area citizens informed.

We need you and other League members to help with this review next Sunday, September 15! We'll work in teams to look at back issues of our area papers to note types of stories, variety of sources, and other criteria suggested by the Washington League. This should be interesting and fun!

After we wrap up this initial information gathering phase, we plan to share what we have learned with our League members and the broader community. We'll fill you in on what we're considering next Sunday.
