Women's History & Leadership

We believe in the power of women to make a more perfect democracy

That's been our vision since 1920 when the League of Women Voters was founded by leaders of the women’s suffrage movement. For 100 years, we have been a nonpartisan, activist, grassroots organization that believes voters should play a critical role in democracy.

As we look into our next hundred years, the League aims to build power for the next generation of women leaders while honoring the courageous trailblazing women from the past whose stories have too often gone untold.

"Without vision, people perish, and without courage and inspiration dreams die."

-Rosa Parks

Women’s Equality Day

At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 and passed in 1973,  the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day.” The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York. The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality. Workplaces, libraries, organizations, and public facilities now participate in Women’s Equality Day programs, displays, video showings, or other activities.

Our League’s tradition is to observe Women’s Equality Day with a special event that shares the story of courageous women.  We have honored local trailblazing women with a unique event at Shiner’s famous Dinner Theater, learned more about courageous suffragettes at an informal wine and cheese event at the Shinverville Coffee Shop, and paid tribute to African-American women’s journey to suffrage and equality with an unforgettable presentation by Naomi Mitchell Carrier, and our original "Press On, My Sisters" reader-theater production on the the Equal Rights Amendment

Women’s History Month

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history.

Our League celebrated Women's History Month in 2023 with Women Making History 2023, an afternoon at Schulenburg's historic Senglemann Hall that included recognition of the eight women currently serving as Mayors in our South Central Texas community, and hearing an inspiring presentation and call to action by Schulenburg native Arleas Upton Kea. Our 2024 Women Making History event featured students from area high schools and the women they chose to honor with essays and poems by participating in our first Celebrating Women Student Writing Showcase.

Planning is underway for Women's History Month 2025. Please email Helen Niesner, WMH Chairperson, if you are interested in helping wih the planning.

Fostering Women’s Leadership

As a volunteer-run and led organization, the League depends on the amazing gifts of leadership that women bring to the world! From small acts of helping out with a meeting to serving as an officer or board member, there are many opportunities for women to contribute and grow their leadership capacity.

Join us for fun, fellowship, rewarding volunteer opportunities, and opportunities to demonstrate and grow your leadership.

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me

I am stronger for their courage, I am wiser for their words

I am lifted by their longing for a fair and brighter future

I am grateful for their vision, for their toiling on this Earth

We are standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before us

They are saints and they are humans, they are angels, they are friends

We can see beyond the struggles and the troubles and the challenge

When we know that by our efforts things will be better in the end

They lift me higher than I could ever fly

Carrying my burdens away

I imagine our world if they hadn't tried

We wouldn't be here celebrating today

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me

I am honored by their passion for our liberty

I will stand a little taller, I will work a little longer

And my shoulders will be there to hold the ones who follow me

They lift me higher than I could ever fly

Carrying my burdens away

I imagine our world if they hadn't tried

We wouldn't be so very blessed today

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me

I am honored by their passion for our liberty

I will stand a little taller, I will work a little longer

And my shoulders will be there to hold the ones who follow me
