Welcome to LWV of South Central Texas' Weekly VOTER

 
Democracy doesn't run on autopilot — it runs on people like you. Each issue brings you a few concrete actions to empower voters and defend democracy, ways to dig a little deeper into the issues shaping our communities, the latest on democracy in the news, plus updates on what our chapter is doing across Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Gonzales, and Lavaca counties.

Three things to do for democracy this week:
 
Check your registration — then pay it forward. Confirm you're registered, then show three friends how to check theirs. There's still time to fix problems before the Oct 5 deadline for the Nov 3 election. 
 
Tell Congress: No to the SAVE Act. Congress keeps pushing bills that would require documentary proof of citizenship to register or vote — three major ones so far this session. Many eligible voters don't have easy access to those documents. Americans don't need more barriers to voting.
 
Know your Vote by Mail options. Nothing has changed — mail voting is still available in Texas for all who qualify. Watch LWVTX's short explainer, then pass it on to someone who'd benefit. 
"You claim to be nonpartisan, but you're political — so which is it?"
 
That question came from a letter to the editor in one of our local papers — and it's one we hear often enough that it's worth answering clearly, and worth equipping you with a few tips for when you're asked as a League member.
 
The short version: we're both, and that's not a contradiction. Our nonpartisanship is about candidates and parties; our advocacy is about issues, decided by our own members through study and consensus — not by any party's platform.

Sharing a few headlines worth your attention this week, with a Texas focus:
  • Tarrant County cuts polling sites by nearly a third. Commissioners voted along party lines to reduce Election Day locations from 316 to 224 (and early voting sites from 50 to 47) despite adding over 70,000 registered voters since 2022. 👉 Read More - Fort Worth Report
  • 1.2 million Texans on voter "suspense lists." Counties couldn't confirm mailed address verifications for 1.2 million voters statewide, including 300,000 in Harris County. They can still vote, but face extra paperwork unless they update their registration by October 5. Read more. 👉 Read more - Houston Public Media
  • Galveston County redraws precinct maps mid-cycle. In an unprecedented move, the county adopted new voting districts after the March primary but before November — meaning some voters will choose candidates in districts that weren't in effect when they cast their primary ballots. 👉 Read more - Votebeat Texas
Watch Now: Will the Midterms Happen?

This past July, the nonpartisan news outlet Votebeat hosted a live Q&A tackling one of the most-asked questions of the election season: will the 2026 midterms actually happen? Short answer: yes — but the bigger risk isn't a canceled election, it's one that's chaotic, contested, or cast as illegitimate after the fact. Votebeat's reporters and editors, who cover election law, administration, and misinformation full-time, walked through the mechanics of how elections actually get run and answered audience questions live.

Friday, September 9 - Fayette County
Our League's monthly column will appear in the Fayette County Record. The topic this month is "The Historical Roots of Local Election Control in America." If you do not receive the Fayette County Record, you can read this column on our League's website.

Tuesday, September 15 (National Voter Registration Day) - Cuero
League volunteers will be at Cuero High School from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon to register high school students who will be eligible to vote in the November 3 General Election. Thank you, Diana Austin, for setting this up!
 
👉 Our goal is to offer this service in more South Central Texas high schools. If you have a relationship with a principal, school counselor or government teacher at the high school in your area and can help us get connected, we need your help! 
 
Friday, October 2 (tentative with place tba)
Voters Guides for the November 3 election will be back from the printers and ready to distribute to area newspapers, libraries, and community locations around October 2. We're planning a work day to fold, count, and bundle Voters Guides - and then get them on their way to their intended destinations. The date, time and place for our workday will be confirmed once we know when we can pick up the Guides from the printer. Stay tuned!
 
👉 And meanwhile, our team is hard at work on the November 3 Voters Guide. Thank you to Catherine Burns, Cindy Meredith and Kristin Foster for leading this effort!

Still building. Still caring for one another. Still determined to shape what happens next. Not just tomorrow, but for generations to come. When we vote, we put that power into action. We are America.
