Women's History & Leadership

We believe in the power of women to make a more perfect democracy

That's been our vision since 1920 when the League of Women Voters was founded by leaders of the women’s suffrage movement. For 100 years, we have been a nonpartisan, activist, grassroots organization that believes voters should play a critical role in democracy.

As we look into our next hundred years, the League aims to build power for the next generation of women leaders while honoring the courageous trailblazing women from the past whose stories have too often gone untold.

"Without vision, people perish, and without courage and inspiration dreams die."

-Rosa Parks

Women’s Equality Day

At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), introduced in 1971 and passed in 1973, the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as "Women's Equality Day." The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement with its formal beginnings at the world's first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. The observance of Women's Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment but also calls attention to women's continuing efforts toward full equality. Workplaces, libraries, organizations, and public facilities participate in Women's Equality Day programs, displays, video showings, and other activities.

Our League marks Women's Equality Day each year with a special event celebrating the story of courageous women. Past events have taken many forms — from intimate gatherings to theatrical productions — exploring topics such as local trailblazers, the suffragette movement, African-American women's journey to suffrage and equality, and the the Equal Rights Amendment. We are especially proud of our original reader-theater production, Press On, My Sisters. Watch our calendar for information on this year's event!

Women’s History Month

Every March, Women's History Month — designated by presidential proclamation — honors women's contributions throughout American history.

Our League celebrates Women's History Month with our signature event, Women Making History, bringing together community members, local leaders, and students each year to recognize the remarkable women who shape our region. Highlights include tributes to community-nominated women of distinction and our Celebrating Women Student Writing Showcase, in which area high school students submit essays and poems honoring women who have inspired them. Watch our calendar for information on this year's event!

Status of Women & Girls Fact Sheet

The League of Women Voters believes that representative government and the well-being of communities are inseparable. When women are underrepresented in leadership — or face barriers to health, economic security, education, and safety — the entire community is affected.

That belief led us to take a closer look at our own backyard.

Our five-county region — Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Gonzales, and Lavaca — is home to approximately 52,000 women and girls. While statewide data on women's issues is widely available, the specific realities facing women in small, rural communities like ours are too often overlooked. To address that gap, we researched and published the [Status of Women & Girls in South Central Texas](INSERT LINK), a four-page profile examining health and maternal care, economic security, education, safety, workforce participation, and civic and political representation across our five-county region.

What we found matters. Women in our region face higher uninsured rates, longer distances to maternal care, significant wage gaps — particularly for Latinas — and persistent underrepresentation in elected office. At the same time, our region shows genuine strengths: high school graduation rates that meet or exceed state averages, and voter turnout that consistently outpaces the rest of Texas.
This fact sheet is a tool for voters, candidates, community leaders, and policymakers to understand where gaps exist and where action is needed. We update it periodically as new data becomes available.

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me

I am stronger for their courage, I am wiser for their words

I am lifted by their longing for a fair and brighter future

I am grateful for their vision, for their toiling on this Earth

We are standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before us

They are saints and they are humans, they are angels, they are friends

We can see beyond the struggles and the troubles and the challenge

When we know that by our efforts things will be better in the end

They lift me higher than I could ever fly

Carrying my burdens away

I imagine our world if they hadn't tried

We wouldn't be here celebrating today

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me

I am honored by their passion for our liberty

I will stand a little taller, I will work a little longer

And my shoulders will be there to hold the ones who follow me

They lift me higher than I could ever fly

Carrying my burdens away

I imagine our world if they hadn't tried

We wouldn't be so very blessed today

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me

I am honored by their passion for our liberty

I will stand a little taller, I will work a little longer

And my shoulders will be there to hold the ones who follow me
