• If you aren’t listed as active, you are not registered. Please register!

Research Candidates And Issues On Your Ballot

• Go to Vote411, the League’s online, interactive voters guide for nonpartisan information on candidates and ballot issues.
• The League offers printed nonpartisan Voter Guides at area libraries and various community locations. Pick up a Voters Guide and then pass it on to a friend!
• No phones are allowed at the polls, so print out or make a list of your selections.

Bring These Items To The Polls

• Your photo ID is required.

• Any paper notes or printed research from VOTE411, or your sample ballot with your candidates marked. You cannot use your phone at the polls.

• You do not have to bring your voter registration card.

It's Time to Vote: The Step-by-Step Voting Process:

• Find your polling location: Voters can check their registration status and find their assigned polling place (or eligible countywide vote centers, depending on the county) through VoteTexas.gov or their county elections office.
• Put away cell phones before entering and leave campaign apparel and materials in the car: Cell phones, tablets, and laptops cannot be used in the room where voting is taking place. It's best to silence and put devices away, or leave them in the car, before entering the building. Devices may be used outside the voting room, as long as they are not used to record sound or images. Texas law prohibits wearing or carrying apparel, buttons, or materials that support or oppose a candidate, ballot measure, or political party within 100 feet of the polling place, even if that candidate isn't on the current ballot. It's best to leave campaign clothing or items in the car, since voters may otherwise be asked to remove or cover them before entering.
• Check in and present photo ID: At the check-in table, the voter gives their name to an election worker and presents one of seven acceptable forms of photo ID: a Texas driver license, Texas Election Identification Certificate, Texas personal ID card, Texas handgun license, U.S. military ID, U.S. citizenship certificate with photo, or U.S. passport. IDs may be up to 4 years expired (voters 70+ may use an ID expired any length of time).
  
• No acceptable photo ID? Use the alternate process: A voter who does not have and cannot reasonably obtain an acceptable photo ID may present a supporting document (such as a utility bill, bank statement, government check, or voter registration certificate) and sign a Reasonable Impediment Declaration, then vote a regular ballot.
• Receive access to the voting station: Once checked in, the voter is directed to a voting machine or paper ballot station and given whatever access code, card, or ballot is used in that county.
• Mark the ballot in private: The voter reviews each race and measure and marks their choices privately, using the touchscreen or paper ballot method the county provides.
• Review and cast the ballot: Most Texas systems produce a paper record or summary screen for the voter to review before finally submitting or casting the ballot.
• Receive an 'I Voted' sticker and leave: After casting the ballot, the voter's participation is recorded and they may leave the polling place.

How to Vote for a Certified Write-In Candidate:
Texas only counts write-in votes for candidates who have officially filed as a declared write-in candidate and been certified by the Secretary of State or county filing authority. Follow these steps to make sure your write-in vote counts.

• Confirm the candidate is a certified declared write-in candidate. Only votes for candidates on the official list of Declared Write-in Candidates are counted. This list is available in advance through the Texas Secretary of State's website and is posted inside at every polling place. A write-in line will appear on the ballot only for races where a declared write-in candidate has qualified. If there's no write-in line for a race, no candidate qualified for it that year. Note: Write-in voting is not permitted in runoff elections or in other elections where it is expressly prohibited by law.
• Mark your ballot: Casting a write-in vote takes two actions, and both must be completed for the vote to count: 1) Mark the write-in indicator (an "X," filled oval, or darkened area next to the write-in line, depending on your ballot type) and 2) write the candidate's name clearly and legibly on the blank line provided. Marking only one of the two can create an ambiguous vote that may not be counted.
• How this looks on different ballot types: On a hand-marked paper ballot, place an "X" or other clear mark in the square next to the write-in line, then write the candidate's name on the blank line. On an optical/digital scan ballot, darken the oval or area next to the write-in line, and write the candidate's name on the blank line. On a touchscreen / ballot-marking device, follow the on-screen prompt to enter a write-in name; instructions specific to the device are posted at the voting station.
• Review and cast your ballot: Before submitting, check that both the mark and the written name are clear. Then cast your ballot as usual (ballot box or scanner, depending on your polling location's equipment).
