Honoring Women's Contributions to Our South Central Texas Communities

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history.

Our League celebrates Women's History Month with our signature event, Women Making History.

In 2023 with Women Making History 2023, an afternoon at Schulenburg's historic Senglemann Hall that included recognition of the eight women currently serving as Mayors in our South Central Texas community, and hearing an inspiring presentation and call to action by Schulenburg native Arleas Upton Kea. Our 2024 Women Making History event featured students from area high schools and the women they chose to honor with essays and poems by participating in our first Celebrating Women Student Writing Showcase.  In 2025, we invited community members to nominate women for special recognition. Our Women Making History 2025 featured presentations on the eight incredible women selected from an impressive field of nominees, and the three students whose essays were judged "best of the best" from the entreys in our second annual Celebrating Women Student Writing Showcase.

We look forward to another inspiring event in March of 2026 - with an additional round of honorees from Community Nominations and more award-winning student essays from participants in our Student Writing Showcase.

STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS
by Joyce Johnson Rouse

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me
I am stronger for their courage, I am wiser for their words
I am lifted by their longing for a fair and brighter future
I am grateful for their vision, for their toiling on this Earth

We are standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before us
They are saints and they are humans, they are angels, they are friends
We can see beyond the struggles and the troubles and the challenge
When we know that by our efforts things will be better in the end

They lift me higher than I could ever fly
Carrying my burdens away
I imagine our world if they hadn't tried
We wouldn't be here celebrating today

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me
I am honored by their passion for our liberty
I will stand a little taller, I will work a little longer
And my shoulders will be there to hold the ones who follow me

They lift me higher than I could ever fly
Carrying my burdens away
I imagine our world if they hadn't tried
We wouldn't be so very blessed today

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me
I am honored by their passion for our liberty
I will stand a little taller, I will work a little longer
And my shoulders will be there to hold the ones who follow me
