Sister-League Connections Offer Opportunities for Cross-League Sharing, Collaboration & Friendship
With more than 800 local Leagues across the United States, the opportunities for cross-League sharing are immense! Sometimes "immense" can be so overwhelming that figuring out how to start never makes it to the top of the list - right?
Our League is well connected with other Leagues in Texas, thanks to frequent opportunities that LWVTX creates for Leagues to share and collaborate. And, we have have now gotten to know a League working in a rural area of New York State - another big state, like Texas, that is largely rural but is known for its big cities. Through several conversations, we have discovered that we have much in common and much to learn from each other! Thus, we have decided to become "Sister-Leagues" (like Sister-Cities), and meet at least twice a year for sharing, collaboration and friendship.
The League of Women Voters of St. Lawrence County - our Sister-League - works in the far north part of New York State. St. Lawrence County, a rural mix of farms, forests and small towns, is the largest county in New York State and the fifth largest United States county east of the Mississippi River. Canton, the county seat, is located about 25 miles from the St. Lawrence River. The St. Lawrence River forms the boundary between the county and neighboring counties in Ontario, Canada. The northern gateway to the fabulous Thousand Islands area is found in the county's river towns of Morristown and Hammond.
Eventhough the St. Lawrence County League formed much earlier than our South Central Texas League, we are of similar size and share many of the same challenges. Our Sister-League meetings provide great opportunities for us to exchange information, offer encouragement, problem-solve together, and expand our vision of what we can do. All are welcome to join our biannual Sister-League exchanges!
