Subject: League Observer Corps Kick-Off - Sign Up Now

Hi League Members!
 
We're ramping up our League's Observer Corps this month, inviting members to help strengthen the culture of civic participation in South Central Texas by committing to attend meetings of an elected body as a League Observer.
 
Meetings of an elected body? More simply stated, we mean meetings of County Commissions, City Councils, School Boards, Water District Boards, and Hospital District Boards in our five county area.
 
As a League Observer, you would volunteer to regularly attend meetings of the group that most interests you. By regularly attending, we don't mean you need to attend every meeting. We mean attending regularly enough to keep up with what's going on and how things work. You can decide what regularly means for you.
 
As a League Observer, your job is simply to observe, jot some notes, and send a quick report to us via our super user-friendly on-line form. Once you sign up, we'll get you a note-taking form, the link to submit your observations, and a very cool button you can wear to identify yourself as a League Observer. Every couple of months, we will gather League Observers together so we can compare notes and identify opportunities for League action.
 
Your choice - but we have found that being a League Observer is more fun if you have a buddy to attend with you. If you like this idea, we encourage you to recruit a friend, or find a League member to be your Observer Corps buddy for the meeting that you select.
 
Are you wondering what will you be observering? We're interested in learning more about how these meetings work. Are they citizen friendly? Are Texas Open Meeting laws being observed? What issues of community interest are being handled? 
 
Please join us in signing up to be a League Observer, knowing that you will be joining a group of League members who are showing their commitment to our mission - empowering voters, defending democracy - by more active participation in our democracy.

Here's how to sign up to be a League Observer
  1. Go to our League's website (www.lwvsouthcentraltx.org)
  2. Click "member login" in the top right corner of the home page. If you don't remember your username or password, click the "forgot username or password" box for help.
  3. Point to "Get Involved" in the black menu bar at the top of the page; click "Observer Corps" in the drop down menu that opens up under "Get Involved". 
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the Observer Corps page until you see the red graphic of raised hands and information about signing up to be an Observer.
  5. Click on your county in the list of counties in the sign up block.
  6. Click on the black "view more" arrow on the left and the list of meetings in your county will be revealed; you can identify the meeting you want to observe from this list. Disregard the times and dates on this list; times and dates will depend on the meeting you select to observe.
  7. Click the green volunteer yourself button in the top right left to sign up! Fill in the requested information and check the meeting you want to observe.
What happens when you sign up?
 
You can begin attending meetings as an Observer any time. We'll check in to see if you have any questions when we spot your sign up.
Want to know who else has signed up? Here's what to do:
  1. When you click the "view more" arrow and the list of meetings is revealed, the "Assigned" column (last one to the right) will have the word "who" visible if others have registered for that meeting.
  2. Click on "who" and it will show who else has signed up!
Want to contact a person who has signed up?
  1. At the top of the home page in the black bar, find "Members Only" to the far right. You need to be logged in to see this "Members Only" option.
  2. Click on "Members Only" and then look for "Member Directory" in the drop down menu that show up under "Members Only".
  3. Click on "Member Directory" and you see see a map and a search box.
  4. To find who you are looking for, enter their last name in the "search text" box and then click "search" in the bottom right corner.
  5. The person's information, including email and telephone number, will appear!
If you want to peruse the membership directory to get ideas about who might be a good Observer buddy, simply leave the search text box blank and hit search.  You'll see listings for all League members there!
